arise to the Siamese Government owing to the exceptional treatment of British subjects. In consequence of the constant representations made by him, an arrangement was arrived at in May last between himself and His Royal Highness Prince Devawongse relative to the settlement of outstanding claims for the seizure of Chinese spirits belonging to British subjects.
No. 38 of June 15th contains the agreement by which it was agreed that the Siamese Government should prevent any further seizure of spirits belonging to British subjects. I also reported in a despatch dated June ... last, which is also transmitted herewith, that the favourable terms upon which the outstanding claims were settled had led to a revival of the spirit traffic in the provinces.
